STEAM Education

Given the increasing importance of STEAM in Australia’s future, Fountain College offers various opportunities for students to engage in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) related learning activities.

STEAM naturally aligns with learning outcomes in normal teaching in class. Students’ interests are further piqued in Fountain College’s elective offerings. Students have access to 2 sets of electives during the week. Some of these elective choices are completely STEAM focused. These electives are:

  • Forensic Science: Students will have the opportunity to learn about forensic science including the type of detective work that goes into forensics. Includes higher order critical thinking, making use of data and situational analysis.
  • STEAM Engineering: An advanced science elective where students will extend their knowledge and understanding of engineering. In this elective, students learn about the design process and design their own model or prototype throughout the semester.
  • STEAM Coding: An advanced technology elective where students explore the area of coding. Students will have the opportunity to learn and improve their understanding of coding, write their own code and implement their skills in different applications.
  • STEAM Arts: Students cover different forms of art every term and have the opportunity to produce and display their own art. Topics include surrealism, skateboard art and electronic art (Procreate).
  • Contemporary Technologies – Artificial Intelligence: Students delve into the emerging area of artificial intelligence. Students will learn how to effectively use AI and make use of AI to generate content.

Students select their elective of choice at the beginning of each semester and have the opportunity to change electives each semester.

Students work towards displaying their projects and/or units of work in Fountain College’s annual STEAMfest. STEAMfest is an event where student work and the school’s community are celebrated. STEAMfest is held during Term 4, giving students ample opportunity to finalise their projects. Students attend to present their work, allowing them to engage with members of the school community.
